la carriera di Sam Hopkins iniziò nei primi anni 20 in texas e continuò fino ai primi anni '80.
durante la sua carriera vide ilsuo genere (country-blues) cambiare molto ma non tradì mai il suo stile da "mournful Lone Star" che riusciva ad esprimenre sia con la chitarra acustica che elettrica.
anche suo fratello john Henry era un musicista ma fu solo Sam a diventare famoso. nel 1920 incontrò ad una funzione religiosa il mitico Blind Lemon Jefferson e riuscì a suonare con lui, più tardi gli fece anche da spalla ai concerti.
