List-Post: From: "Janice Siegel" jfsiege@ilstu.edu

To: Subject: recruitment efforts - what works (I think)

To those who argue that today's students just aren't interested in Latin study (I face this every day), I have ammo to contribute to the war. I'd like to present a sample of the responses I got on today's survey of students who signed up for first semester Latin this fall at Illinois State University. These are among the responses to the question "Why Did You Choose to Take Latin?"

1. I was told it was a good language to take by family and friends.

2. Because I'm a masacist (sic, with smiley face added).

3. Interested in extending my language abilities (improvement in Portuguese) and history of culture, history of different words

4. I am a poetry major (need word etymologies), I am a fan and student of Virgil's poetry (in translation) and I want it as a learning tool for other languages (grad student)

5. I read philosophy and religion - special interest in the scholastics (grad student)

6. I am an anthropology major plannign on going to grad school. I'm hoping this will be helpful and I'm interested in the language (and curious).

7. personal desire

8. I always wanted to take Latin. I think it is a dignified and intelligent language.

9. I've always been interested in Latin, and wanted to do somethign most other people don't do.

10. Personal interest - I decided this was going to be my third language since I enjoy philosophy.

11. I think it will be interesting and I must take a foreign language. Many professors and others recommend Latin. Plus, I think it would be cool to speak Latin.

12. I find Latin interesting, and becuase my sister recommended it. Also, to fulfill a language requirement for a B.A.

13. Because it is NOT a dead language (this alludes to one of the ACL posters I posted).

14. I am an English education major and seeing that 60% of our words came from Latin interested me.

15. to fulfill foreign language requirement.

16. I read a book entitled "Great Careers for Anthropology Majors" and the author suggested Latin.

17. I major in Roman History. Latin always interested me because it is the language of scholars.

18. I am a bio major and want it for med terms.

19. Because I want to be able to learn things that are fun. This is a language that interests me.

20. I am a big T.S. Eliot fan and thought it would be cool to actually understand what he meant when he makes Latin references.

21. I heard that Latin was good for English majors. It sounded interesting. I am interested in the classics, but know very little about them.

22. It will be a challenge. Latin will help in learning other languages.

23. I decided I hated XXX (write in the language of your choice) and I've always wanted to learn Latin. People have also said that it helps in writing. Also, I'm a history nut.

24. My English advisor encouraged me.

25. It seems very interesting and I had a very good recommendation from a current Latin student.

I expected comments like "I have a friend who likes it" and "I need to fulfill my language requirement". Then there are the self-motivators. But I am convinced that the reason enrollments in first semester Latin have doubled since last fall is that I have successfully enlisted undergraduate advisors from other majors to fight for my cause. I was heartened to see how many students from a host of disciplines report that their advisors (or even that book for anthro majors!) recommended Latin. I am convinced that these advisors from other depts are our greatest asset: English, foreign language, history, education, philosophy, anthropology...I made the rounds in the spring (it took all of one day), visiting undergraduate advisors in different disciplines and gave them each an appropriate poster - state mottoes for history, language trees for foreign lang, word etymologies for English, dictionary work for the library, and some posters in hallways about how cool it is to take Latin and why. Many of my students this term had their interest sparked by these posters too. I got them from the American Classical League and I think they work! LOTS of people comment to me about the posters they see everywhere Graduate students were given an extra option of meeting with me once a week in the evening instead of coming 4 days a week during the day, and 6 have taken me up on it. That's 5 more grad students enrolled than last year! And we expect this only to get better. I owe my English dept colleagues a debt of gratitude - they have really been chatting it up! So 29 doesn't sound like a lot for a school of 21,000 students? Wait till next year.
