Library of the Institute for

the Study of the Ancient World, New York University

New York University seeks a qualified individual to develop, implement and manage the Library of
its newly founded Institute for the Study of the Ancient World.

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World [ISAW] is a unique center for advanced scholarly
research and graduate education, offering the Ph.D. degree through NYU’s Graduate School of Arts
and Science. It has a wider geographic span than other programs that focus on the ancient world,
incorporating not only Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin, but also the Near East, and
Central, South, and East Asia. In its research and its teaching of doctoral students, ISAW will
emphasize an interdisciplinary approach, one that transcends modern boundaries of nation. It will
support scholarship that crosses customary disciplinary boundaries – art history, literature,
archaeology, history, geography, geology, economics, and sociology, among others – to create a new
intellectual framework for understanding the ancient world, and to train a new generation of
scholars steeped in that integrated approach. ISAW will begin its work in the Summer of 2007 and
expects to admit its first PhD students in Fall 2009.

The Library will support the research and curricular needs of ISAW’s faculty and graduate
students. Because the Institute is a new undertaking, the Librarian will have the unique
opportunity to build an entirely new library collection and design a service program suited to the
needs of scholars in the 21st century, incorporating traditional and digital collections, and
taking advantage of new techniques for access, delivery and collection building. The Librarian
will work closely with the Institute Director and faculty to shape a library program that supports
the interdisciplinary work of ISAW. Those interdisciplinary programs will also require that the
Librarian work collaboratively with other libraries at NYU and in the New York area to insure that
ISAW faculty and students have access to the broadest possible range of collections and that the
ISAW Library collections complement rather than duplicate the extraordinary range of resources New
York’s cultural institutions make available to researchers.

The Head of the ISAW Library, reporting jointly to the Director of Collections and Research
Services in NYU’s Division of Libraries and to the Director of ISAW, is responsible for all
aspects of the Library’s operations, including oversight of access and research services,
development of the Library’s collections, liaison with other NYU Libraries departments (including
technical services provided for ISAW), and liaison with ISAW’s faculty and students. The incumbent
will be responsible for the Library’s close collaborative relationship with other NYU Libraries,
including the Institute of Fine Arts Library on East 78th Street and the Elmer Holmes Bobst
Library on Washington Square. The incumbent will develop and implement close working
relationships with other libraries in the New York area, such as the Library of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and the libraries of Columbia University.

Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS and subject Master's degree required for tenure; an advanced
degree in a field of study relating to the ancient world, demonstrating a full understanding of
the scholarly process; at least five years experience in an academic or specialized research
library; reading knowledge of appropriate foreign languages; demonstrated skills in personnel and
budget management; ability to provide leadership and to work collaboratively with faculty and to
build a successful service program in a large and complex academic environment.

Salary/Benefits: Faculty status, attractive benefits package including five weeks annual vacation.
Salary commensurate with experience and background.

To apply: Interested candidates are requested to submit a letter of application that specifically
states how background and experiences are relevant to the position responsibilities and
qualifications; current resume; and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three
references to Ms. Janet Koztowski, Libraries Human Resources Director, New York University
Libraries, 70 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012, (fax) 212-995-4070, or e-mail:
jobs@library.nyu.edu. Resumes will be accepted until the position is filled.

NYU ENCOURAGES APPLICATIONS FROM WOMEN AND MEMBERS OF MINORITY GROUPS.
