Presso l'Università di Warwick, U.K., il giorno 8 marzo 2008 si svolgerà una conferenza ad alto livello alla quale parteciperanno illustri docenti ed esperti delle più prestigiose università britanniche. Cari amici,

 

ho il piacere di informarvi che il giorno 8 marzo 2008 avrà luogo presso l'università di Warwick una conferenza dal titolo "Discorsi di guerra nel mondo romano". Il tema della conferenza e la partecipazione di una folta rappresentanza di accademici e studiosi sono una splendida occasione per un incontro del più alto interesse scientifico. Per coloro i quali volessero partecipare come studiosi purtroppo manca il tempo per inviare i propri abstracts, poiché la comunicazione ufficiale è pervenuta in ritardo. Tuttavia è sempre possibile inviare all'indirizzo indicato nel programma allegato le richieste per poter entrare in possesso delle relazioni normalmente messe a disposizione degli interessati alla fine di ciascun incontro. Sottolineo che il cast di docenti ed esperti del mondo antico è di alto livello, per cui si può già prevedere che la conferenza si svolgerà su di un piano di grande spessore storico-culturale.

Discourses of War in the Roman World

Conference at the University of Warwick

 

The registration deadline for the one-day conference entitled, "Discourses
of War in the Roman World from Caesar to Heraclius", to be held Saturday,
March 8th, at the University of Warwick, has been extended to this FRIDAY,
FEBRUARY 29th.

Although warfare in ancient Rome has long been a topic of interest, the
role of culture in the changing practices of war has not. The aim of this
conference is to consider some of the issues raised by Ted Lendon’s
Soldiers and Ghosts (2005), and in particular his discussion of the
relationship between the discourses of war and reality in the Roman world,
with special emphasis on the period from Caesar to Heraclius. The list of
speakers, with the titles of their papers, follows:

 

Ted Lendon (University of Virginia) - ‘What Roman Soldiers Thought About
Each Other: Patterns of Solidarity in Roman Military Inscriptions’

 

Harry Sidebottom (Oxford University) – ‘Battle in the Greek Novels: the
Ideological uses of fighting in popular fiction, or John Buchan meets
Heliodorus’

 

Hugh Elton (University of Trent, Canada) - ‘How to Write History’ (with
apologies to Lucian and Lendon

 

Boris Rankov (Royal Holloway, London) – ‘Milites, masks and mock-battles’

 

Simon James (University of Leicester) - ‘On Soldiering and War: the
verbal, the visual and the material in soldierly discourses’
