On the 7th December 2007 the Subterraneans played a half hour set on a bill with three other bands in the basement of the famous Islington Rock pub the Hope & Anchor.  Jude Rawlins is a charismatic lead vocalist / guitar player but his lyrics were hard to make out through the mix.  Guy Evans gave the group an interesting edge playing his usual style of driving but jazz-inflected rock drumming - at one point using four drumsticks, two in each hand, at another playing with the brushes the wrong way round ie hitting the skins with the handles.  In an email/blog sent out before the show Jude indiated that rehearsal was not a common event for the Subterraneans since they "enjoy operating telepathically" - well if that is telepathy then they are very good at it !  I thought they were very tight (and loose in the right places).  They are well worth catching if you get the chance - I would be very interested to see them stretch out over a longer set. They were third on a bill of four bands so only played for half an hour.  The sound was terrible - The Hope is a cellar, one of the seminal punk rock venues - so we couldn't hear much by way of lyrics.  However the consensus was that they made a great noise, some guitar sounds quite like Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here era), and Guy and the bass player made a very solid unit.  Guy, of course, was impeccable, great dynamics and variety - at one point playing with two sticks in each hand.   I've got the latest CD Soul Mass Transit which is very accessible, I would say the songwriting is above average. There's also a live version of the last song they played on Thursday (Belle Tout - which is a lighthouse on the south coast - http://www.solarnavigator.net/geography/beachy_head.htm) on their myspace site.  They also have a few dates booked in for next year - including one on the 6th April in the middle of the VdGG touring - you might catch that if you're planning to come over.
